The Focus School at Underwood Hills will be centrally located at 9030 Western Avenue and will focus on Leadership through Technology and Communication. The purpose of the school is to immerse students in a diverse environment while exposing them to cutting-edge technology and curriculum offerings in a small school setting. To this end, students will study regular academic subjects while receiving specialized instruction in the focus areas of leadership, technology, and communication.
The students who attend Underwood Hills Focus School will benefit from an expanded school calendar and will also have the opportunity for an extended school day. The official school day will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. All students will be invited to stay until 5:00 p.m. to participate in structured activities that will support the core curriculum, reinforce basic skills, provide enrichment opportunities and enhance knowledge in the focus areas (leadership, technology and communication). This additional time for instruction will focus on meeting student needs to ensure mastery of content standards.
Student applications from all school districts in Douglas and Sarpy Counties at the present grades of 2, 3, and 4 will be accepted for 2008-09. Enrollment will be capped at approximately 40 students per grade level, or 120 total the first year. Students will be randomly selected through a lottery system. It is anticipated that the school will grow in both the number of students it serves and the grade levels offered in subsequent years. Transportation will be provided to all eligible students. The parents of students selected to participate in the Underwood Hills Focus School will be contacted in early March. The school will sponsor a welcoming event for new families in early March.
